WESTERN HORSE IS WINNER
HURON HANDICAP PALLS TO JOHN G. GREEN-
ER’S COLT, COUNTLESS.
Jockoy Davis Makes Mistake of Taking Martinez,
the Favorite. Out to Set the Pace — Helmet
Runs Fast Mile.
Saratoga. N. Y., August 23. — For a feature this
afternoon the Saratoga Association offered the
Huron, a race that had its first running in 1901.
It result isl" in a surprise when Countless, from the
stable of John (J. Greener, who bred Olambala and
Olsoau, as well as other good racers. was
winner after a long stretch drive over S. C. Hil-
itreth’s Hampton Court and Harry La Montague’s
Martinez. The race furnished one of the l>est fin-
ishes of the meeting and it was not until the num-
Iters were displayed that the result was definitely
known in the grandstand. Weather and track con-
ditions were ideal and there was a big crowd in
attendance. It is usual that on days when there
is a race through the field the crowd is greater
than on off days, but the card today, though it
lacked that spectacular race, was first-class and
there was no lack of interest from the winning of
Candleberry in the opening race to the victory of
Thomas Hitchcock’s fleet filly Bouncer In the last
number of the day.
Dalmatian was named overnight in the Huron
Handicap, but he was sold yesterday to Louis Winans
and was shipped last night to New York. His ab-
sence really increased the interest in the running
for the reason that the field was more evenly bal-
anced with him out of the way. Martinez, as was
natural, was made first choice. Countless and Chief
Kee had some following and there was support for
Captain Cassatt's Layminster at a long price. In
most of his good races Martinez has come from be-
hind.
Today Jockey S. Davis, who has made many mis
takes during the season, changed tactics and took
him to the front at the rise of the harrier. He had
sliced enough to cut out all the pace, but he could
not shake off Countless and through the stretch the
Greener three-year-old proved gaqier under a drive.
Hamptuu Court, at long (aids, because he had re
centl.v failed in a less fashionable field, was tin
one that Countless had to beat right at the finish.
He came with a determined rush in the last furlonj
and in another stride he would. have been the win
lier. Martinez saved third place and the others in
the field were well strung out at the fiuish. with
Pretend a bad last.
Rockville, John Sanford's Futurity candidate,
gave another exhibition of his worth when he easily
disposed of a smart lot of two-year-olds. There was
another Futurity eligible in the field, David Dunlop’s
Touch Me, but lie failed to finish in the money,
though his failure was purely due to hard luck all
through the running. He broke last of the field of
thirteen that started and through the stretch, just
when he was racing over his company, he was pock
eted on the rail and had no chance to get through.
Janies It. Keene's Helmet won his first race of the
meeting when he easily disposed of good opposition
in the mile handicap. He ran the distance in 1:38s.
Spin, a Keene two-year-old that started in the last
race, acted greenly all through the race and Thomas
Hitchcock. Jr.’s Bouncer was the winner, makiuj
show of all her opposition when she won by live
lengths in one of the fastest raees of the season.
S. F. Hyman claimed l’erry Johnson out of the
third face today for $9!M».
Jockeys Warren and Hoffman were each suspended
for four days by starter Cassidy.
I*. Dunne will ship his horses to Louisville Sep
temlier 10. He will permit them to rest here until
that date.
Doran te was badly kicked by Dullcare while at
the post in the third race. He ran a good race
after his injury to finish third, hut came back to
the scales lame.
At the close of the present meeting trainer Hurley
will ship the horses of E. U. Bradley- to Lexington.
James Butler’s horses will go west in the same
shipment.
Reports have been in circulation to the effect that
Kit* Herbert had bowed a tendon. The son of
Etlielliert — Morganatic worked a half mile yesterday-
in 53 and 8. C. Hildreth denies that there is any-
thing the matter with liis crack colt.

Sam Hildreth may not win as much money this year as be did in 1909. but it is quite within the bounds
of possibility for him to do so. After Saratoga closes there is still much money to lie won before the year
ends. The Canadian circuit. Lexington, Louisville, Latonia. Oakland. Juarez and Jacksonville will all
present stake races ami in view of the big sum already to his credit he may |>uss his record of last year.
At any rate it is now a certainty that he is again to head the list of winning American owners. His stable

first place in the American sire list of 1910. The deposed leader. Sweep, is still seeond. but is closely
pressed and is likely to he passed by Olamliala, perhaps by others. Thirteen horses are now winners of

its winner Iasi year, Searpia, lias only run moderately well this year, but aside from Salvidere,- Smart Set.

Saratoga, N. Y., August 23. — The announcement
by Secretary Percy W. Treat of the New California
Jockey Club that that organization, of which Thomas
H. Williams is president, would race more than one
hundred days at Oakland, beginning Novemlier 12.
was received with enthusiasm b.v the rank and file
of race-goers here and particularly by the lmrsemen.
many of whom at once announced their determina-
tion to race on the coast next winter. Mr. Treat's
announcement conveyed the information that twelve
stakes would be run for and that liberal purses
would be offered in overnight events. This means
that special races no doubt will lie arranged from
time to time, as the tendency always has been to
bring out the best horses at Oakland. T
George H. Smith, the personal representative of
John G. Cavanagli, again will have charge of tho
oral betting system installed so successfully last
season. Witii a Supreme Court decision that money
may be placed in the hands of a stakeholder, to lie
paid after the races. California, it would seem, lias
an ideal law governing speculation. For this reason
it is expected there will be a marked increase in the
ui tendance at Oakland, as many New Yorkers in
search of recreation will make the journey. San
Francisco, with its fine hotels and restaurants, is a
natural winter racing point and as such will attract
those who like to wager a few dollars on a trial of
speed between good horses and regard it as no crime
to do so.
Judge Charles H. Pettiugill. one of the officials of
the New California Jockey Club, has received as-
surances from a number of prominent owners in the
east that they will raee at Oakland the coming sea-
son. President Williams is expected at Saratoga
this week, when further announcement of the plans-
for the meeting may be looked for. Mr. Williams
always has had a competent staff of officials at his
track and horsemen know that their rights will he
protected. The public at the same time is assured
that the horses must run to form, as no perform-
ances that cannot be satisfactorily explained will be
tolerated.
NOTES OF THE TURF.
Effendi is out of training for the rest of the year,
because of a bowed tendon.
Lord Rosebery again has first call on the services
of jockey Danny Maher for next season.
There was not a race in the Hamilton book that
failed to fill during the recent meeting.
Black Chief, the three-year-old black Allan-a-Dale
colt recently purchased by F. J. Sweeney, of Wash-
ington, will be trained by Jerry Carroll.
R. T. Wilson, Jr.'s Fantasque, the two-year old
brown filly by Disguise— Ed itlia. and the two-year-
old bay gelding, Abouml, have been turned out for
the season.
Frank Ilegan will shortly ship Ardri, Glandore
anil two other horses from Saratoga to Gravesend.
The horses will be freshened and prepared for a
■winter campaign at Jacksonville, where Mr. Regan
raced successfully last season.
The abolition of the existing valet system for
jockeys was recommended by the Windsor officials
to the Canadian Racing Associations ami a similar
recommendation goes from Hamilton. At the com-
ing Windsor meeting the valets will he employed by
the club.
Dalmatian, sold to Louis Winans by S. C. Hildreth
for the reported price of $00,000. cost Mr. Hildreth
$K»0 as a yearling and won for him $24,500 in
stakes and purses last year and this. The colt has
liecu shipped to New York and will leave for Eng-
land within a few days.
S. C. Hildreth's steeplechaser. Black Bridge, is
through racing for this year. His near front ankle
filled badly after his last race and trainer Silas
Veitch will send him from Saratoga to the Hil-
dreth barn at Sheepshead Bay when he ships the rest
of his string to Canada.
Martinez. Merry Kuight, Searpia and Gauntlet
will be included in the shipment of horses that will
fo to France about October 1 to carry Harry La Mon*
tkgne's colors. Particular attention will be paid to
steeplechasing and the four horses named will be
educated for the cross-country branch of racing. Mr.
La Montague already owns a half dozen yearlings
of French pedigree and birth. These will be broken
and handled by trainer Burch.
Assemblyman Frank Otis, of Alameda. Cal., one of
the sponsors for the Walker-Otis anti-racing law in

BEST ENGLISH TWO-YEAR-OLDS OF 1910.
Tlie time lias. I think, arrived when I may use-
fully present an analysis of the statistics relating
to this season's successful two-year-olds and their
■ires. Here we are in the month of August. The
racing year is half over, so that we arc in a posi-
tion to gauge pretty accurately the merits of the
young stock. It is the more necessary that we
should do so at tills juncture, because during the
next four weeks we shall be devoting a good deal
if attention to the yearlings that are eoming tip for
-ale at Doncaster next mouth. Due of the safest
principles a buyer can adopt for his guidance is
lo give Hie greatest heed to tlie offspring of the
inosi successful sires of tlie day. On the eve of the
sales last September 1 gave a table showing tlie
records up to date. Among other hints which this
afforded wag tlie one that yearlings by Symington
were worth special attention. The achievements of
two-year-olds l»y the Straffan sire t li is season prove
pretty conclusively that the “tip” was a good one.
Of course, the figures relating to the most success-
ful sires which appear in tlie Sporting Life every
week have an appreciable value and interest, bur
I think 1 may claim that tlie tallies pertaining
solely to two year-olds which 1 publish from time
to time have their particular use. Here, then, are
tlie details concerning the sires whose two-year-olds
have this season won stakes amounting to $2,500 or
liver in the Knifed Kingdom. I should explain that
so far as English racing is concerned the table em-
braces events decided up to and including Wednes-
day of last week: that is to say. all that have been
reported in the t'alendar. I have added Irish sta-
tistics up to July 20:

St. Denis and Chancer appear in a list of success-
ful sires for tin- first time. The one owes Ids promi-
nence to St. Nat, tlie other to Oliver Goldsmith.
Both these stallions are, of course, sons of St. Simon

At present most people would. 1 suppose, single
out Cellini. Seaforth. St.’ Nat and Pietri as the best
four colts. Of this quartet Seaforth is tin- only
unbeaten member and for that reason be is, per-
haps. entitled to be placed first. Both at Epsom and
Ascot In? won bis races very easily, but when we
glance ai the opponents lie liad to heat it would
seem that lie Iras not yet trail a particularly still
lask to perform. This, however, is not to say that
lie will be unequal to the occasion when it comes
along. It will be noticed that Seaforth is one of
four two-year-olds by Symington which have all won
prize money to the value of $2.5(8). No other stal-
lion can claim so much as that. Mr. Kennedy will
1 m- offering some high-class yearlings by Symington
at Doncaster next month, including a beautiful half
sister to Dark Ronald, a sister to Dhu Loiui, and a
first-rate colt out of Magnitude.
An examination of the pedigrees of tlie two-year-
olds in the hInivc tabic shows tlrat seven of them
have close crosses of Hampton on the dam’s side.
Lycaou and Manwolf are out of Hampton mares:
Quick. the dam of Mushroom, is by Olierry Tree;
Glare, tin- dam of Romeo, and Ballantrae. the dam
of Niglitrider, are by Ayrshire; Nathalie, tin*
dam of St. Nat. is by Royal Hampton, and Queen
Kizabeth (lralf-sister to Forfarshire), the dam of
Radiancy, is by Ladas. The dams of Dim Loun.
l.utonia. Castelline. Seaforth. Duke of Padua and
Wavinta are all descended from Touchstone. Cel-
lini and Knockfeerna are out of Gallinule mares:
Meleager and Baliati out of mares by Persimmon
and St. Frusquin respectively, and the Stoekwell
line is represented by lie- dams of Oliver Goldsmith
and Joie de Vivrc (through Master Kildare) and
Nicola and the Spinning Jenny filly (through Bend
Or). Foot Guard’s dam traces back to Tlie Baron
through Rataplan. — “Special Commissioner” in Lon-
don Sporting Life.
THIRTY LEADING JOCKEYS.
But for having been suspended during the latter
part of last week. C. II. Shilling might now lx- the
leader in the jockey list of 1910. He has reduced
Guy Garner’s lead to the perilous margin of six
winmrs and another week will doubtless see Garner
deposed if tin- two lsiys continue lo show tin- same
saddle form as of late. Shilling piloted six winners
during the four days tlrat he rode last week, as

WEIGHTS FOR THE WELLESLEY.
Saratoga. N. Y., August 2:’,. — Bashti, winner of
the Spina way. lias been allotted lop weight in the
Wellesley Handicap for 1 wo year-old fillies, to lie
ruu Thursday. She is asked in lake up 130 pounds
aud give away great lumps of weight to sueli good
ones at Round the World and Housemaid. The
distance is five and a half furlongs. Following are
guise. Voter, Celt, Ben Brush and Delhi— are
thrusting him aside.
Admiration was developed by John Madden, who
sold her to Mr. Whitney. She was just In-ginuing
to make a reputation for speed when, in the summer
of 19(8), Air. Norton, who had won the Brooklyn and
Brighton handicaps of 1898 with Ornament, brought
to New York the Patron — Lily Hempstead marc.
May Hempstead. May Hempstead came out of tin-
west with a brilliant reputation made on the tracks
of Tennessee and Kentucky. Mr. Norton and his
western friends were confident that sin- could beat
anything in Mr- three-year-old filly line the strongest
eastern stable afforded, and it was Mr. Norton who
suggested that she lie matched with Admiration.
Just before tliis suggestion was made May Hemp-
stead rail a mile at Sheepshead Bay in 1 :39. Mr.
Whitney appealed to Air. Hildreth, who was training
for him at tlrat time, as to whether Admiration
could beat a three-year-old filly that could run like
that. Mr. Hildreth advised tlrat the match lie made,
and offered to pay whatever it cost if Admiration
was lM-aleii. Admiration easily boat May Hemp
si end. Favorite in the betting chiefly because of the
Whitney money, the daughter of Kingston stopped
her rival from the west In half a mile, and finished
the mile in 1:40 or thereabouts.
SPECIAL HORSE TRAIN TO KENTUCKY.
Louisville. Ky., August 2.3. — The Kentucky State
Fair Association, unable to give $150 purses for the
miming races scheduled for this fail at Douglas
Park, has reduced them to $125, to come within
tin- appropriation allowed for the sport. The secre-
tary. J. W. Newman, decided not to reduce the first
money of the purses, and tlie winner will get $100.
the second and third horses standing the $25 re
duct ion. The races are attracting considerable at-
tention tills fall, for the reason tlrat they will have
as contestants a lietter hit of horses than ever
before raced at a fair here.
Secretary Lyman II. Davis received a tele-
gram from Col. Matt J. Winn today stating that lie
would 1 m- here not later than September 2 or 3. and
tlrat the eastern end of tlie coining meeting at
Churchill Downs lias shaped tip nicely. A special
train will leave Saratoga immediately at tin- close
of the summer meeting there lmnnd for this city,
and it is estimated tlrat not’ lesft than 300 horses
will come to Kentucky oh it.
